China, Canada to build research center for child development, Alzheimer's disease
CHONGQING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese-Canadian research center for child development and the study of Alzheimer's disease will be built at Chongqing Children's Hospital in southwest China, hospital authorities said Sunday.
The center will be jointly funded by the Chinese hospital and the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada with a total investment of over 30 million yuan (4.8 million U.S. dollars), said Li Tingyu, the hospital director.
The two sides signed an agreement on Saturday on the building of the center at the ongoing International Conference on Development and Disease.
According to the agreement, medical researchers at the center will carry out research on diseases such as Down syndrome, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism, and learning dysmnesia.
The center will also serve as an exchange base for Chinese medical researchers to cooperate with their foreign peers, Li said.
The center, to be operational within two or three years, has invited chemistry Noble laureate Aaron Ciechanover as a consultant, according to Li.
